Hansen's Flower Shop
Still classic after 100 years in business
Imagine walking into a hundred-year old flower shop in the center of town, a family business that may have made your grandmother’s wedding bouquet. What do you see?
If that shop is Readers Choice winner Hansen’s Flower Shop, your idea of a century-old florist is about to change! Here you will see classic favorites—think peonies, roses of all shades, and lush hydrangeas. But there are surprises, too: Mokara orchids from Thailand, French lavender, thistles, monstera leaves, Nigella pods, a dozen varieties of the new “it” foliages.
“We love unique flower combinations you might not see anywhere else,” says a Hansen’s designer Nancy Gardiner. Though they are well known for events and large-scale installations, they also focus on those little moments of connection that flowers create. “A small bouquet, even a single flower can make someone feel special. That’s what we do, every day.” Hansen’s excels at making Fairfielders feel special. From a lovingly curated plant department where every purchase comes with care instructions, to crave-worthy fruit and gourmet baskets (they even sell wine!), to a comfortable consultation area where clients can sink into soft leather armchairs and browse Hansen’s award winning designs on a large flat screen, it’s clear that this historic business is future-thinking, too.
“We are passionate about staying ahead of the curve,” asserts Gardiner. “Our cut-flower conditioning, our design mechanics, our new website, even our packaging—we’re always incorporating the latest advances in the industry.” It doesn’t hurt that owner Bruce Minoff’s shops include local favorites Bruce’s Flowers (Norwalk), Irene’s (Monroe), and Beachwood Florist (Milford). That network gives them buying power beyond most independent florists, and allows them to deliver from Greenwich to New Haven. Minoff, who started his first shop at just 22 years old, is looking forward to a year-long celebration, as 2020 marks 50 years in business for Bruce’s Flowers as well as Hansen’s milestone 100th. Festivities will include demos, workshops, contests and plenty of giveaways.
